My ethnicity apparently changes depending on the immediate environment. I get followed in stores here in Texas, and asked questions like, “Where are your people from?” But when I go to work–I’m a Ph.D.–I am told, “You’re Hispanic? I just don’t see it.”

Being Christian and racist is an oxymoron.

There are times when people are honestly surprised that I am a successful African American woman. Due to my race, people have asked me really ridiculously inappropriate questions: “Was it hard to get out of the ghetto?” Me: I don’t know. I didn’t grow up in the ghetto. “Did you get into college because of affirmative action?” Me: Actually, I was able to get into college because of my 3.6 GPA and killer ACT score. “How does it feel being the first person in your family to go to college?” Me: Actually, my great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and sister all attended college and have college degrees. Don’t let BET fool you. Being a black successful professional is not an oxymoron. We exist.
