Cute when thin, angry when fat

I’m a 43 year old black woman who has spent most of her adult life living and working in the South. I notice that when my weight fluctuates I’m perceived differently — as different stereotypes associated with my race, gender and sexuality. At times when I’m heavier, many assume me to be a hostile and intimidating presence, no matter how accommodating and unassuming I behave. They may sometimes even assume I’m a lesbian or asexual. At my thinner size people are convinced that I’m younger and express dismay when I don’t “keep it cute and on mute.” Some are downright perplexed by my confidence and consider my assertiveness as “uppity,” which is something, believe it or not, I’ve been called to my face by seemingly polite white people. There’s much more to be said about how, whether fit or fat, the morphology of the black female body is always a particular subject of scrutiny. The failure to appear as “cute, “or to conform to an explicit and intentional social performance of diminutive proportions, comes with special pressures in cases where gender and race overlap. It is my belief that the hyper-vigilance I and many other black women have developed to fend off microaggressions might actually create the very health issues like hypertension and diabetes that I work so hard to avoid, regardless of my size.

White immigrant = not an immigrant.

Linda M Larsen,
Hudson, WI.

Hungarian+British +Canadian = American.
I’m an immigrant, a ‘legal alien’ from Canada, with Hungarian and British parents, living in the USA. I’m supremely aware of the fact that no one sees me as ‘immigrant’ because I’m white. I moved from a very visibly multi-racial large Canadian city to small-town, lily-white America. I worried about how I would teach my daughter about the joys of living in such a diverse community as I came from, but in the end, I needn’t have worried. We pass on to our children what is most important to us, never mind whether it is perceived as good or bad by others.

I look white; perception is reality.

Mary Halling,
Milwaukee, WI.

Moving from New York to Ohio to Milwaukee in my 25 years on this Earth, I’ve encountered race in so many different ways. From celebrating and learning about all the different ethnicities in my classroom in elementary school, being bullied for being white in my urban middle school, to being incorrectly perceived as being “just like” my upper-class white counterparts at Miami University in Ohio, to working for an education/social-justice non-profit in hyper-segregated Milwaukee, I’ve learned how much race truly is a social construct. It’s something that is learned from our environments and the people in those environments. Being perceived as ‘white’ has yielded me an overwhelming amount of privilege, and it makes me feel sad that if people recognized my mixed identity (I’m partly Native American), I may not have been afforded those privileges. But, maybe, those girls in middle school would’ve been nicer to me?
