The young are not naturally prejudiced.

I am a para in a special education class, and the high school in which I work is very diverse. The longer I work in this field, the more I have come to see that kids are kids. People are people. I am frustrated, elated, encouraged, concerned, and inspired by all of them, irrespective of their race. But what I appreciate most is that THEY taught me to see them this way, because so many of them see the world this way themselves. There is hope, and it lies in time and the future generations to come.

Prejudice, lying in wait, hidden underneath.

You see it rear it’s ugly head every so often. Like during the first Obama campaign. He was only in office a month or two and there was such hatred of his “politics”. Not disagreeing but very aggressive in their opposition. He hadn’t even done anything yet. People disguised their prejudice saying they didn’t like what he was doing. All he had done at that point was be black. It made me feel sad and scared for the future that prejudice is still there all around me hidden.
