Being Biracial is really a challenge. Being half black and half Arabic makes me feel like I belong to neither race. Many people look to their own race as somewhere they belong, but it’s the opposite for me. Since I’ve been young each race makes me feel like I’m not “really” apart of their society. There has been several encounters where I have been talked down upon because of my race. This only makes me stronger and more compassionate to those who also deal with this. The less race revolved we are the better!

Challenging the knowledge has no age

I am a literature professor in Brazil and after completing 40 years of age, I’ve decided to come to United States and attend a PhD program. If a program of this importance is already quite challenging, it becomes even more challenging when it is done in a second language, especially if you are a Latin person. So, next time you see any international student before you, embrace him/her, praise him/her and exalt the fact that he/she has decided to do this. Imagine yourself doing a graduate program in a language that is not yours.

with me about what her name really was, as opposed to how the professor said it. She would say her name, the professor would butcher it, she would continue to make her points in the class discussion. After class, I decided to talk with her about the interaction. She graciously took the time to speak with me about her name and her academic work for an hour after. “Why would I explain all of this to a random white lady? Because you heard, you asked, you listened.” Thank you again for that intimate conversation

Never too old to be profiled

I am a sixty-nine year old black college professor with all white hair. From time-to-time I am stopped by police officers and questioned. It’s never about speeding, but rather it’s about, “Is this car yours?” I drive, what I call, a rather “high-end” car and I believe that they think that it is a stolen car. I would think that after all of my years as a law-abiding citizen, I would not be subjected to such treatment. Race still matters in America!

I was in my supermarket recently. I had just left the gym, dressed in my tights, Puma gym bag, iphone in hand, black hoodie. I was about to turn onto an aisle at the same time as an elderly white woman. Out of respect for her age and slower speed, I slowed down to let her go ahead of me and then I came to a stand still so she wouldn’t feel the need to rush. Instead, she grabbed her pocket book from the the upper level of the cart and positioned it tightly beneath her arm. I am a university professor. You go, she held her purse.
