My Skin Color Poses a Threat

Mia Woodard,
Dallas, TX

Because of my skin color, when I’m out in public I am looked at with disgust and spoken to rudely.
Because of my skin color, I am not always afforded the same opportunities as the next.
Because of my skin color, the Asian cashier in the beauty store follows and watches me.
Because of my skin color, I am an automatic threat to police officers, the same ones that supposed to protect, right?
Because of my skin color I’m held at gun point and killed for wearing a hoodie and having a pack of skittles and Amazon tea.
Because of my skin color, its okay for a police officer to put his knee into my neck, after I repeatedly said “I can’t breath”
Because of my skin color, it’s okay for a white person to comment racial slurs.
Because of my skin color, it’s okay for police officers to come in my home, without announcing themselves and kill me.
Because of my skin color, I don’t get justice.
Because of my skin color, I am stereotyped.
Because of skin color, I get a heavier sentence, than the white man who committed the same crime.
Because of my skin color, I am strong.
Because of my skin color, I am brave.
Because of my skin color, I am smart.
Because of my skin color, I am beautiful.
Because of my skin color, I am a Queen.
Because of my skin color, I am Black.
Because of my skin color, I am ME.

“An Intelligent, Independent African American Women!”

Based on stereotypes and neither are my sisters. The media instantly judge African American Women on their many failures, but what about their success? You’re most likely to hear about the statics of African American Women getting pregnant in 2015 on social media than those who graduated from college or trade school. I oppose the writings of Peggy McIntosh’s in ‘White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Back Pack,’ because as a child I even knew the privileges “European Americans” had and I’m pretty sure they did too. Their taught the way of knowing what they have through their history similar to how I was taught. I was raised to understand my history, and understand how my ancestors were Kings and Queens taken from their homeland to unwillingly work for “European Americans.” I’m not upset one day our intelligent, independent African American Women will be given back our crown. We will welcome the day our privileges will be restored, and we will not be based on “their” stereotypes anymore.

I am a young black woman proud of the skin I’m in. I love my race of people when those who don’t. I’m always proud because it seems as if every obstacle placed before my race we always concur leaving others dumbfounded. Others outside my race seem to always try and emulate us making me more proud that what was and is hated on is ever so much loved.

White husband, still a Nubian Queen

Kavisa,
Brooklyn, NY.

My parents raised me to be extremely proud and knowledgeable of my African American and Caribbean heritage. My love for Africa intensified further after spending 2+ years living and volunteering in Tanzania. In the mist of becoming fluent in Swahili and embracing East African culture I fell in love with my future husband, who happens to be White. Now married, we live in Brooklyn, NY in a heavily West Indian area. I have long dreadlocks and when I am walking alone the men cat call “Nubian Queen”. However, when I walk the Brooklyn streets with my White husband these same men negatively stare or accuse me of being with my “slave master”. One in particular attributed my choice of husband to me being uninformed about the African American struggle or/and wanting to be White. That man was wrong of course. I am 100% proud to be a strong Black woman and my Swahili speaking husband agrees 😉
