Family contrast black white shows beauty

P8022086Sherry Weaver,

Our family is a beautiful rainbow. We are pink with brown spots and brown with pink spots.

We are just a family. I didn’t “rescue” anyone-we gave each other gifts. I was given the incredible gift of love and diversity, and they got a family who loves them and can appreciate them. Just like all families, each individual brings something different to the whole. My first son is empathetic, my second son is a great athlete and my daughter is beautiful and caring.

It’s not about surviving being black, It is about realizing how wonderful it is to be of African heritage and how wonderful it is to be of Scottish heritage. I tell my daughter how beautiful she is while I put on my makeup and tell her how lucky she is to have such gorgeous mahogany skin.

She understands this is just one of the the many joys of being black. Anyone who can’t see that is just not looking.

And no disrespect Chris Rock- She does have “Good Hair”. It is as beautiful as the rest of her.

We’re flawed. We’re perfect. We’re human.

The warmth of the sun shines brightly through storm clouds, and the contrast produces rainbows. Similarly, the diversity of humanity makes our connection with others as beautiful as that separation of the white light spectrum, because seeing, and acknowledging, our differences, reflects the absolute perfection in our human diaspora.
Even when we encounter some people who are closed off to, or even antagonistic towards, the diversity of our modern, global, society, they, too, are a part of that beauty, by being a reminder of the colorless world we would live in if it was only possible to see ourselves by our flaws and not also by our perfection.

Blessed to grow up in diversity

I grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago at a time when our community worked extra hard to be racially and ethnically diverse on purpose. Our small community was also nationally recognized for its racial diversity. I recall thinking that it was so incredible to be around so many different kinds of people! Our school pictures looked like a rainbow! There were black, white, Latino, Filipino, Asian and Native American students in all of my graduating classes. We played together, fought one another (as kids will do) but we also fiercely defended one another if necessary… It didn’t matter your ethnic or racial background… If you were from our community or from our high school we we were family.

I just wish people would get out of their minds that the focus on “race” only includes some sort of ethnic identification. When people speak of diversity they should be speaking of all kinds of differences–differences in abilities, sexual preference or identity, religion, or any other sort of differences that may exist in people.

Ashamed of being mostly white. Sadly.

I chose a picture of a rainbow because I think it fits the subject of my card. I am mostly of Caucasisan (Irish) descent. I am also of Jew, African, and Native American descent. I look white. Recently I have been made to feel ashamed of my white heritage, and even been afraid to speak out about racism or any type of comparison. When I informed people who ganged up on me that I was not just white, I was called a liar because I “look too white”. Doesn’t that go back to the “I’ll decide if I’m black enough” comment? I have experienced so much hatred from people of other races just because I look white. I know what it feels like to be hated for the color of your skin. I know what it feels like to be rejected because you are descendant from a race that other white people consider to be “impure” too. I hear about this white privilege but I grew up in the ghetto’s with all the other mixed race kids, poor as heck, and I don’t know no white privilege. I had to struggle and work my butt off for every penny that I made and I’m STILL struggling. I don’t put white on the race portion of the job applications and surveys. I put “other” cause there is no category for me. I have very few friends and am not widely accepted no matter what race I attempt to relate to. It is so frustrating. WHEN are we going to just drop the race crap and just decide to be PEOPLE? Is there no place for us mixed people?? I’m human too.

I Don’t Have Any People

I am always hearing people say, “my people”, “your people”, “our people”, but why can’t we just be people?
It never crossed my mind to call all white people or more specifically Norwegian people (which is a portion of my ancestry) “my people” because they simply are not.

America, hell the entire world is already divided by race, why do we need to uphold such division? We need to unite in order to prosper as one people, as humanity. I am not color blind, I see color, I would be a fool if I claimed otherwise. But what I see if a beautiful array of color that stretch out across the horizon like a rainbow.

Rainbows are so beautiful because without all of their colors, they wouldn’t be a rainbow.
Let’s end the division and unite as a people. But I think the only way that can happen is if we put all the [race] cards on the table and discuss them like calm, mature adults.

Hugs for everyone! I love you all!

I love being in the minority

Jonathan Rivera,
NY.

It may not all be sunshine and rainbows when you are in the minority group, but it has its benefits for sure. I am a Hispanic young male and let me tell you, I have been exposed to many new and different experiences because I am within a minority group. I am within a science program that recruits minorities because the main purpose is to get minority groups into the STEM fields and the program itself has exposed me to many new and different things. There are more to being a minority and you can’t let the hurtful things get to you, focus on the positive, ya know?
