Every time I go to the store people be keep on eye on me. They follow me around. I’m just trying to buy some now or laters. The people who work at the store tell me to take out my pockets to see if I’m trying to steal things. I even got the cops called on me because I wouldn’t take my pockets out to let the workers look at them. Not everyone black person is a thug theft etc. I always pay for things when i go to the store. My mom didn’t raise me like that. My mom raised me to be myself.

That was the question that my daughter asked me when our house was broken into a second time in three years. As a Korean-American living and working in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, I was tempted to answer her question by telling her about the long-standing hostilities between the two groups. But I didn’t. I understand the need to be honest with our children about the realities of the world, I really do. But I also understand that children do not interpret what we teach them in the subtle way in which we would like them do. I might think that I am giving a nuanced lesson in history, when all her young mind hears is, “People of that race don’t like me because I’m a different race.” And even after all that my family has been through, I really don’t think that dynamic is true, and neither do I want it to become true for her, and for others. And so I hugged her and told her that we don’t anything that we can’t live without, and she accepted that answer…for now.

Im a 22 year old African American male who lives in California. Whenever I enter a store, gas station, or even a movie theater. I feel an unwanted vibe as if I’m on the radar by all the managers and floor workers. A negative vibe as if I’m being looked at like about to steal an item. So i wrote my 6 words “why steal when you’re already looking” describing that vibe i always feel when i walk into a store.

I think I am becoming racist

I work in an area with a lot of Hispanic or Latino immigrants from different places. I have not had many good experiences with them. For awhile I just tried to excuse their behavior as not knowing or understanding the cultural differences but it’s getting harder. Before I continue, yes I know there are good people and bad people everywhere and in every race. But the stealing, the letting kids run in the parking lot, the leaving stuff on the ground on purpose, the bad hygiene — it all gets to me. One moral I hold dearly is respect and bottom line is for whatever reason the overwhelming majority of them do not show it. It’s not just one race or one family but I’d say 95% of them in this area. The few good ones remind me that it is never a whole race but I feel myself becone more prejudiced and hateful. However in the meantime I still treat them with respect, be kind to their children and help them in any way I can like any other customer. What can I do to stop myself from feeling this way?
