Do you make your own tortillas?

Norma Torres Addis,
Seattle, WA.

The first time I heard this question, I thought it was funny. After hearing it a few times, it made me wonder. If my heritage is Mexican and I don’t know the first thing about making tortillas does that make me less of a Latina? So many times organizations I work with have tried to start the conversations about racism and social justice over ethnic potlucks. While I agree that sharing a meal brings people together, aren’t we more than just the food we eat?

I worked hard to get here

I get that yes in theory as a white male I have a head start in life, but I most certainly did not have it handed to me on a silver platter. I worked hard to get into college and am still working hard to make the massive student loan debt worth it when I get a good job. I would not even be in college if it was not for a small (and I mean less than close to covering 4 years of college) account left to me that covers the holes left by loans, grants and scholarships. I understand that concern for non-whites and non-males is important, hell I support it. But please don’t forget that just because a guy is white, that does not mean he does not need help or that he worked any less hard to get where he is.

Italian Boyfriend Uncomfortable Visiting Arizona Home

Mike McNamara
Chicago, IL

Especially in the non-winter months because he gets so dark.

Growing up in Tucson, he was sometimes mistaken for Mexican, which makes sense when you look at him from afar.

But only recently has he felt uncomfortable going home to visit his family based on that same mistake that people have made. He wonders if he is being treated differently because things have changed, he’s become more paranoid, or just recognizes something now he didn’t notice that’s always been there and he only recognizes it because he’s been away.

Whatever the reason, he doesn’t feel the same way about his hometown because of the constantly xenophobic (at best) political climate.

In the grand scheme of still existing racism, potentially-white-guy-mistaken-racism is more ‘ha ha’ than ‘serious problem’ but mentioning it to his slightly-racist-but-not-at-all-dark-skinned relatives has maybe made them think.

And last time he went home he didn’t go anywhere with ID.

Controlled by the chains of society.

There are many demeaning stereotypes that our nation has adapted throughout history. For example, women are typically judged as weak, which is why the phrase “you can’t loose to a girl” is so prevalent among children. These stereotypes are often applied to people of a different race, color, or religion, and it has become almost a social norm to disregard the opinions or feelings of others for the entertainment of our peers. Because we have grown accustom to this being a part of our history we don’t understand that people take offense to jokes criticizing them for no reason, or criticizing their culture/the way they grew up. These stereotypes have been a part of our society for many years, and generation after generation adapt them to their everyday lives.
