I heard this when my husband and I were living in Indiana. We studied at Bloomington, and I got a job offer in Indianapolis after graduation so we moved there. We rented a low-end apartment that we could afford at the time.
On the first Halloween we lived in that apartment, some kids threw raw eggs at our balcony window. The next morning, we went to the rental office and reported the incident. The clerk reluctantly took down the information, but since we did not see the faces of the kids, she said that there was not much they could do.
Well, we thanked her and were about to walk out of the office. She then said: “We received some complaints about the smell of YOUR food… Remember! Turn your cooking fan ON when you cook.”
We left her office without dignifying the comment, and we moved out once the lease was up.

One Mirror With Many Different Reflections.

I hear people talking about being a part of a pure race. Race is a distinction placed upon one’s physical and genetic traits most notably skin color. Race is a social construct created to make one category seemingly superior over another.
Biologists and anthropologists have discovered race mixing throughout the history of humankind. I have both an African and a Native American bloodline or diaspora (and maybe others). Therefore, what am I really – Black or Red? While I choose to identify as Black/African- American, I am really a mirror with many reflections.

Not aplogizing for my white skin

I am a 21 year old white female living in the ghetto. I have always been the outcast. I grew up in foster homes with black foster mothers and siblings, I have lived in all-black neighborhoods and went to all-black schools. I have never felt out of place surrounded by black people or white until now. I don’t know of it’s because of the fact that I am not a teenager anymore or because of the current events but the racial tension has gotten unbearable. Black people consistently refer to me as “the white girl” and not in the joking matter that they did when i was a child. For all of you people who think black people can’t be racist, I am here to tell you that they can. No, not prejudiced; racist. They genuinely feel superior to you. It is hard for a black woman in America and I will never understand but I can tell you that it is also very hard for a white woman in the ghetto and that’s something a black woman will never understand.

Before we did this project, I thought that race, was just, race, everyone had a race, and that was that, like a lot of the people in this world right now. But then in this project, we dived deeper, and we learned that “race” was just a concept created by humans. I had never thought about race this way before. It really opened a new perspective to me, and I think differently about race since then. My ethnicity is Chinese, and I connect with it quite a bit, because at home my parents speak Mandarin Chinese to me. Also, we eat mostly Chinese food at home, which is pretty different from Panda Express. Like my 6 word memoir says, “race” is a concept humans created, to treat different people differently, based on looks. Racism is still a problem in our world. We can’t just pretend like it’s not here. We need to treat all races equally, and not believe in stereotypes about different races. Chinese is my ethnicity, and I am proud of it! But in the end, we are all simply human.

Race is just a Social Construct Created by Humans.

Race is not scientifically real. Race is simply a concept humans created to classify “different” humans, based on physical appearance, so people could be treated differently. As Robert Wald Sussman, a professor and physical anthropologist puts in his book, The Myth of Race: The Troubling Persistence of an Unscientific Idea, “It is not a biological reality, however, but a cultural one. Race is not a part of our biology, but it is definitely a part of our culture. Race and racism are deeply ingrained in our history.” So race is not scientifically, or biologically real, it is just something we have woven into our society. Race and racism is taught, children are not born racist. Race is not scientifically proven, people just used it as a way to categorize, and discriminate against, people who look different. Race is a social view, that people are different, and should be treated differently because they look different. Race is a social construct, to make some people feel less, and some people feel superior, all because of outer appearance.

The suffix “ism” ruins everything.

Race is merely a form of innocuous classification used to identify and group individuals of a common heredity. The concept only becomes socially divisive when people begin to erroneously assume that their own race is inherently superior to others and act in accordance with a such a belief.

Why was I taught we’re superior?

I identify as a white individual. Throughout my schooling I feel that I was inherently taught that white is the superior race. We were taught that black people went through slavery and that they were, and still are, discriminated against but that is primarily where there story ends in the classroom. We would go on to learn about the white people who discovered new places around the globe, white people who discovered cures for diseases, white people who came into power in various places. I think it is sad that I even have to ask why we didn’t learn more about black history. Of course, I recognize that black is not the only race besides white, and I am in no way saying that they are lesser either. But for the purpose of this, I am focusing solely on the fact that black people did not seem to be an important part in history, when in fact, they did. Now, looking back at my education and realizing just what I have talked about here, I am surprised that I am as open minded about other cultures as I am. Maybe it was my family life, maybe it was my friends, who knows. I just know that I do not feel superior, and for the longest time I thought that was wrong. But it’s not.

Growing up I can clearly remember saying that whites were the superior race in this country wheter it was being used as a joke or a serious matter. When it comes to the issue of race their is no such thing as being superior over another race. Currently our President of the United States is African American that doesnt make his race more superior over any other race because he truly believes that we are all equal.

Skin is the color of humanity.

Everybody has one. No one is better than another. None is superior or inferior to another, yet it is one of the devices we use to judge and classify each other. Racism doesn’t belong to white people. It belongs to all races of people because all races to some degree judge by race or racial bias. When will judgement by color stop? Never, so long as different races of people exist.
