I would like for more people to deconstruct the role race places in the way they are perceived and responded to within their immediate environment. I would like for more people to develop the skills of conversing about race across difference in a way that can deepen our understanding of what racism is and how it actually functions. This way, more of us can consciously counter racism as a system.

My world told me I’m Black.

Race is a construct we all have a part in teaching to our youth. Yes, we are a part of a system, yes we are just individuals working to make the best as good as it can be, yes the oppressive ideas and incentives that keep race and other factors of difference prominent decision-making tools in our communities and countries. So what are you gonna do about it?

By doing nothing, I’m the problem.

As a white male who reaps the unfair benefits of institutionalized racism, I must make it an absolute priority to find actionable ways in which I can help alter the system to better promote actual equality. Acknowledging that the system is broken but doing nothing about it is just simply not enough.
