I’m a white male; I’m unwanted.

Anonymous,

Living in a world where quotas of minorities must be accepted into major institutions, being a white male becomes a disadvantage. If I am paired against a minority of same academic and extracurricular achievements as me, I will most likely be brushed aside. I believe the only true way to make things fair is for applications to be blind to race, gender and age, only by making race no longer an issue will we truly reach equality.

My son thinks he’s endangered, unwanted

Dustin Hills,
Casper, WY.

My blonde haired, blue eyed 11 year old was told a couple years ago in science class that redheads, being a recessive gene, are being bred out of existence. Because this includes his maternal grandmother and his paternal grandfather, and because he has a huge heart he was very concerned when the teacher told him that they were an endangered species, and would be going extinct within a few generations. When he pressed his teacher for more information, he was told it was only a matter of time before his own blonde and blue would be a thing of history as well. That night he wondered why, if humans went out of their way to save endangered animals, why not endangered humans? Did nobody care about people like his grandparents or himself? I was at a loss. I had no idea how to talk about Aryan genetics without feeling like I was wearing a “Hitler Was Right” t-shirt or acknowledging the history and future of our race without espousing what in adult conversation would sound like supremacist ideals. It’s hard to raise informed children as part of a people that doesn’t seem to have a right to be proud of their race. “Black Power” “Brown Pride”, slogans like this can’t be used by us without sounding like we belong on a commune in Idaho somewhere. How do you show a kid that it’s good to be proud of who you are when society looks down on that as being extreme?

White In Oklahoma….Unwanted Racist Thoughts

Being white in Oklahoma for the last 15 years is annoying sometimes. I grew up in a very tolerant family in CT then CA and was the minority in a mainly black neighborhood. My first boyfriend and love was black. all my friends were black. I was actually racist against white people. I claimed that my Italian heritage made me “not white”. In Oklahoma racism is very prominent especially in peoples “jokes”. I find these views creeping into my thoughts and it bothers me. I know that I don’t agree with these views but to have these racial thoughts, prejudices and ideas even for a split second bothers me.
