Red is NOT ‘the new black’

red is the new blackJoni Graves,

I made this mash-up design for a t-shirt after an unfortunate coincidence in my email inbox. Prior to today’s announcement by the DA in the shooting of Tony Robinson, and two minutes after the UW-Madison Chancellor’s email “Campus resources for the Tony Robinson decision”, I received a “Badger Voice” newsletter email from the Alumni Association with a picture of four bright red t-shirt designs and the headline “Red is the New Black” (a “fashion cliche” that, according to a 2004 column by William Safire, probably goes back to the mid-1990s). Under the circumstances, I wanted to say “red is NOT ‘the new black'”.

I can’t be a police anymore

Anonymous,
Madison, WI.

I’m from Madison, WI, where Tony Robinson was killed by police. I’ve been studying at UW Madison in the Legal Study field and I planned to join MPD after college. This was before the big spike in Black Lives Matter protests. Everyday this weekend I see calls to counter the police, and protest, and videos of people shaming the police in my city. I don’t support police shootings, I think they’re terrible for everyone. All the good police I’ve met in this city are being shamed by my fellow students. I’m too afraid to tell anyone my plans anymore, and I don’t think I can follow through with my plans without most of my friends hating me. I wanted to join the police because I want to give people good impressions of the police, but now I see that nothing matters if one officer does something wrong.

I am more than just “white”

Jordyn Schara
Madison, WI

I am Polish. I am Irish. I am German. My ancestors were immigrants in the early 1900’s. We were masons and farmers and hard working, loving people. We were urban pioneers and revolutionaries and strong and resilient. When you look at me, you see “white”. I wish you would look deeper. I wish you would see that I am not just a filled in bubble on an ethnicity survey. I am Jordyn, and there are stories buried beneath this skin.
