No white dolls for my daughters!

I am a young African American single father, working hard to make sure my two daughters understand and value their own beauty, in the face of constant imagery and media messages that would suggest otherwise – my oldest was 3 the first time she wanted her hair straight like some Disney princess. I am committed to them seeing diverse images of beauty through the eyes of different cultures around the globe, and very sensitive to even the toys they play with and what they watch on tv. Honestly, I’ve been known to “disappear” any white dolls they might receive as gifts, especially those of the pretty-long-blonde-hair variety.
My alternative: “Barbie? No. Doc McStuffins for us!”
