During my time in the Air Force and later at the VA – two places you would think should have an acceptance of racially diverse patients and employees, I experienced some of the worst racism.
Indeed the VA had required diversity training, sexual harassment etc which, I guess, nobody paid attention to. My direct supervisor continually made inappropriate jokes/comments regardless of my objections. Not just about me being a Jap, saying white people knew what they were doing when they put my parents in concentration camps during WWII etc. Jokes were also made about “Black Lives Don’t Matter” etc. Shamefully, his bosses didn’t even know if we had signs in the workplace addressing these issues and how to report instances. Many people are scared to report because of the “torture” experienced once the “investigation” begins.
