You’re just like a normal couple.

Kathleen J Gagnon,
New Haven, VT.

We were at another couple’s house, for dinner. The meal was excruciatingly boring, but the man of the couple was my Army officer husband’s CO, or Commanding Officer, so I pasted a smile on my face and got through the evening. When it finally ended, we thanked our hosts and got in the car for the short drive home. “Let’s not do that again soon,” I said to my husband . It was a short drive home. Many of the officers lived in the same small area of Colorado Springs. As we walked in the door of our apartment, the phone was ringing. I answered to hear our recent hostess gushing, “What a wonderful night! Why didn’t we do this sooner? You and Duffy are just like a normal couple!” I am white. My ex-husband is African American.
