I inherited Chinese culture and identity from my parents and it’s something my whole family can easily talk about and relate to. When I realized I was queer and started embracing that part of my identity, I discovered that that came with its own history, culture, and heroes, but I inherited all that through the LGBTQ community rather than through my family and my straight/cisgender family members will never be able to fully relate to that. These different cultures often clash and there’s misunderstandings in both communities towards each other. And there is an intersectional culture as well–the experiences of LGBTQ Asians are unique compared to the overall LGBTQ population and to the overall Asian population.
