White woman. Oppressed, just ‘not enough.’

Shannon Donohue.

I am embarrassed, ashamed, and guilty, as a white woman in America. I am also extremely conflicted. My race has committed abhorrent acts, and both literally and figuratively stood on the necks of people of color to continue to maintain power and control. I feel such shame that I have benefited from the privilege of being white and have not done enough to fight systemic racism. However, women across America – and across the world – suffer from discrimination, violence, sexual assault, unfair treatment, lack of resources, and inhumane policy and traditions, at the hands of those in power as well. When we march for black lives (which is necessary, and which I celebrate), policy starts changing. But when we march for women…we are told to shut up. So while I am 100% committed, and passionate, about making the world a safe, supportive place for people of color, part of me feels anger that women are continually oppressed in very similar ways each day, and there is not the same passion to end violence toward us as well. I am thrilled to support all minority groups and want to be a source of goodness in this world- I just do not believe the favor is returned, no matter the color, for women as a group.
