Jermaine Funchus.
I grew up constantly having to ‘defeat’ the odds. As a child, I learned to use the doubts as my own personal motivation. I grew up in an impoverished inner city. Most of my siblings and cousins have spent time incarcerated. I excelled academically, largely on my own. I succeeded athletically, when I wasn’t expected to. I graduated from a college comprising of less than 5% minority population, while not being able to afford books. I obtained an internship (and eventual career) traditionally obtained by high performing white students. I’ve led from junior roles in my organization. I’ve defeated a debilitating health disorder. I’ve grown into an amazing single dad, raising my stepson and daughter alone.
Growing up with the world questioning your abilities and potential, either prepares you to accept defeat or exceed expectations.
