Stay on the phone with me.

Becky White

I was talking to my son one night as he was driving to his home from work. I hear him say “what is he pulling me over for?” I realized that he was being pulled over by the police, and I felt immediate fear. I told my son not to hang up, so that I could hear what was happening. I told him to keep his hands visible, and to not make any wrong movements. He says to me “Ma, do you know how many times I have been pulled over? I know exactly what to do and not to do.” A parent should not have to feel fearful that a traffic stop could turn into something more because their child is black. My son went on to remind me that he has been pulled over many times, and the officers always say that a murder or some crime was recently committed, and that my son fits the description.
