YOU’RE BLACK, BUT NOT LIKE THEM

JAMES MOORE JR.

I HAD SOME WHITE FRIENDS TELL ME THIS WHEN I WAS A KID. I GREW UP IN A MULTI RACIAL NEIGHBORHOOD SO I HAD A VARIETY OF FRIENDS. EVEN MY BLACK FRIENDS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD WEREN’T BY DEFINITION, HOOD. IT DIDN’T HELP THAT I HAD TO TAKE SPEECH LESSONS FROM 1ST THROUGH 6TH GRADE BECAUSE I STUTTERED REALLY BAD! I TALKED PROPER COMPARED TO MOST BLACK PEOPLE. ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS GROWING UP WAS A WHITE GUY THAT WENT TO ELEMENTARY, JR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL WITH. WE EVEN LIVED TOGETHER FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AS ADULTS. SOME OF HIS FRIENDS POINTED THAT OUT TO ME AS AN ADULT. IT NEVER MADE ME FEEL ANY SAFER WHEN DEALING WITH THE POLICE.
