When I first moved to VA. I got a job as a Loan Officer. I took a couple’s application over the phone. They sounded very sweet and I looked forward to meeting them. When I went to greet them the husband said “Oh, I didn’t know you were black”! He said I didn’t sound black over the phone. He was very apologetic, but he was uncomfortable with me closing his loan and he’d like someone else to do it. I was the only black in the office and I played it off as if it was no big deal, but I felt humiliated.
