“I’m not racist, it’s my heritage.”

Shelby Martin.

I’ve been hearing this phrase an awful lot lately, mostly in part to everything going on between the protests and people wanting to ban the confederate flag/remove confederate statues. I’ve heard this phrase from my own family who grew up in the deep south. It’s mind boggling to me that they’re unable to see the oppression related to the flag and all the history that goes along with it. I will never understand how I was able to overcome that mindset and embrace diversity, rather than demonizing others for simply being themselves as the way they were born. I’m happy to be an ally and I fully support the movement!
