My grandparents watched me after school and on weekends while my parents worked. Eventually, I came to live with them. They were apt to use racial slurs aggressively, at times. As I grew older, I felt that the slurs and thoughts were unhealthy and immoral. Finally, in high school I spoke up and told them that those words, feelings, and thoughts were inhumane. The response was “this is how we were taught and raised.”
Since then, I am determined to teach my children and any children with families that allow me to teach them about humanity. Honest conversations about the lack of equality and how do we “fix this”…understanding that it has taken generations to engrain this bias and it might take generations to un-teach bias. This is my sincere pledge.
