My parents immigrated to America from Jamaica in the late 60’s and I was born here in America in 1970. From the time I was young, people have ALWAYS asked me if this is my natural hair color. Depending on the season – my hair can be fiery auburn with blonde highlights in the summer to a deep auburn in the cooler months. For most of my childhood, I told myself that my hair color was simply black until one day I was looking out of my window and playing with my bangs when the light shone thru my hair and I really looked closely at the color.
It was reddish blonde and the sun played beautifully in my hair. I think I was 10 when I had this revelation moment. Flash forward to today – I still get that question, but I also get many compliments. I always have to tell a new stylist that “Yes, this is my natural color before you ask”. My current stylist, who I have had for 5 years, continually says “You have the perfect ombre hair, dark at the top and lighter on the bottom. I’m so jealous.”
