Hapa in Hawaii, Asian in Minnesota

Autumn King.

I am half Caucasian and half Okinawan, born and raised in Hawaii. In Hawaii everyone knows, just by looking at me, that I am Hapa (1/2 White, 1/2 Asian). It’s normal. I’m normal. I’m seen for all that I am. Now, I live in Minnesota and am only seen for half of me. I used to tell people I am Okinawan, French, and English. They didn’t know what Okinawan was, so that turned in to Japanese. French and English was not acknowledged. That was when I would correct people who just saw me as Asian. I don’t correct them anymore.
