Born and raised by Haitian immigrants, I’ve often been told I’m not “actually black” because I don’t fit society’s stereotypes of what being Black entails. Despite this (what I call) “privileged Black status” conferred by whites unaware of their own prejudices, I am just as likely to be on the receiving end of racial micro and macro-aggressions because of the color of my skin. Black people come in all shapes, sizes, hues and histories. Don’t otherize me because I don’t fit in the box that YOU built.
