You’re not really a real hispanic.

Mary Brubaker

Both my parents are from Mexico and moved to the US before I was born. We grew up speaking Spanish at home so I’m fluent. My skin is a lot lighter to them, and many times, I’ve been mistaken for being Asian. When I speak Spanish to people from Mexico, they usually ask where I’m from, because it throws them off. I’ve been discriminated for being Hispanic by some people in the US, but I have also been discriminated by not fitting the profile of what a Hispanic should look like from Hispanics. It’s almost like living in a world where you can’t find a place among the culture you’ve been raised in.
