The Truth of My Race Erased

Ronita Gaines

I am a 52 year old Mother of three -married over 24 years. I was born the same month (April) year (1968) MLK was assassinated. Growing up I was never told the real truth of who I am nor the important position my ancestors played. The only time I heard or learned about my black history was doing the shortest month of the year – February (Black History Month) provided a condensed list of the same black people: Rosa Parks, MLK. The other time I learned about my history during “slavery” discussion the history class. All my life – we are only talk and quiz about White History and NEVER BLACK HISTORY. I remember three years ago is when I started my learning journey and realize everything about my ancestors and truth was altered or erased. At that very moment – I cried. and Its unfortunate that the truth of my race was altered or ERASED. Over 400 years of lies. Generational lies- and we are still fighting for rights that were stolen. We are still fighting to be treated as a human.
