p>One experience that I will forever remember happened in Colorado. I am white but I have a black step dad, for background my mom sister and I are all under 5’2 and my step dad is 6’2, and played college football so needless to say he is built. In this particular story we we’re sitting in a diner and I couldn’t help but notice the stares our family was receiving, then out of nowhere a older white gentleman tapped my mothers shoulder and asked if we were okay and safe looking all of us in our eyes except my step dad . I was younger then but I vividly remember feeling waves of anger thinking that the older man has watched my family have normal family talk for about 30 minutes now but my step dad remained calm and didn’t even look the slightest bit upset as my mother explained he’s her husband and we are in fact safe. It took me years of realizing that some people’s perceptions will never change. ever. racism is everywhere. what truly matters is how we choose to confront and and address the injustices so the world can hopefully strive towards a more fair and compassionate society.
