White people got off the train.

Keith Pacheco,
Langhorne, PA

Sometime 1982-83. I took my German foreign exchange student to Chicago to visit the Museum of Science and Industry. We took the EL south from center city to the south side. As the the train kept heading south more and more white people left the train leaving only black people. I did not know at the time that south Chicago was mostly black. I became afraid since I had this 17 year old German girl in my charge so at the end of the line I took a cab to the museum even though I would normally walk as I do not like taxis. Reflecting back on this, I realize my internal racism was raising its ugly head as I had no logical reason to be afraid. No one was threatening, no one was acting out. Everyone was just having a normal day taking the train to wherever. Would not be concerned today.
