Only one black in my school

Growing up in western New York State in the ’50s, there was only one black kid in school. I remember our First Grade teacher answering a question from another kid in my class about why Tommy’s palms were light colored by saying “God made them that way so we know all of us are the same inside.” Well meaning, I think, but is has always seemed odd and a bit wrong.
