I am not a Mission Mexican

Maria Fuentes
San Francisco, CA

The beauty about living in San Francisco is that every ethnicity group you can think of has its own community. Latinos, especially Mexicans live in the Mission, Blacks live in the projects on third and in the Western Addition. Asians live in the Sunset and whites live in pretty Victorian houses. If you look at me you can immediately assume I am Latina but maybe Salvadoran or Guatemalan or if you’re smart enough, know guess that i am Mexican. Yes, I am Mexican but not a typical Mexican. I am from Yucatan and no i do not live in the Mission like 90% of the Mexican population living in San Francisco. I get annoyed every time people ask me where i live and tell them i live in The Western Addition and they immediately say with modded faces, “Oh, I thought you live in the Mission.” Well, no honey. Not all Mexicans were raised in the same ‘rancho,’ therefore not all Mexicans HAVE to live in the Mission.
