Although being discriminated against is still a real problem, I think we often forget that everyone, regardless or race or color, have their own battles to fight. I think we get caught up in race too much, and that at the end of the day, who we are is shown by how we treat each other, what we do, and how we live out our daily lives, more so than our race or color. I am white, and often I feel judged for somehow being “privileged.” But I don’t feel privileged when I work 80 hour weeks so I can afford to go school full time and help my parents out. I live in Southern California, so I have always been exposed to a multitude of ethnicity and races. When I travel and go to different states, the absence of color is almost startling. But what I see, regardless of race and color, is how working hard makes a difference, and how blaming others (regardless if the problem is race related or not) gets you nowhere. I’m not trying to negate the fact that racism still exists, merely that if we stopped trying to put parameters on individuals based on race and color, the world would be a better place.
