Opportunity, creativity, and education are essential.

First, the Civil Rights Movement opened doors, allowing me to train as a visual artist, and also study art history. The Movement forced changes in hiring practices which enabled me to have a rewarding career as a diplomat, traveling the globe conducting cultural diplomacy programs. I thank God every day for those brave men and women who made it possible for me to live the dream. Sadly, today I am filled with sorrow over the never-ending efforts to overturn the advances for which so many fought and died. The struggle never ends!
