Mexican. Culture. Identify. American. Human.

Lorna Seidel-Owen,
Outside USA.

My mother is from Mexico. She married my father in 1959 and came to live in the United States. The plan was for my dad to eventually work and live in Mexico. She never planned on staying here for the rest of her life. Although she never planned on staying here, she decided that she would raise her children to be Americans. Once she learned English that was the primary language spoken in our home. She had a difficult time adapting to American culture. Her children on the other hand, never considered themselves anything but Americans. Neither I nor my siblings consider ourselves Mexicans. We don’t identify with the Mexican culture at all. Because of the negative connotations associated with being Mexican, we are offended if someone calls us that. Really, it shouldn’t matter; every one of us is human.
