My daughter was born with grey eyes and light brown hair with blonde highlights. Her mother and father are pecan brown with brown eyes. On the 2nd day of our hospital stay, a nurse came in to visit when my husband had stepped out. She commented on how beautiful my daughter is and inquired “what ethnicity is her father”. It struck me that because my daughter is fair skinned with grey eyes, it was assumed her father is not black. & I realized this was the first time, but wouldn’t be the last. It will always be assumed that my daughter is mixed race or biracial because of her features. People don’t understand that Black people come in all colors partly because of the ugly history of slavery and rape that many black people cannot trace and so it shows up many years later in the genes of our children. My daughter is not beautiful because of her skin or eye color or the ethnicity of her father. She is beautiful. Period.
