Growing up as a half-Japanese, half-white kid, I was constantly asked, “Where are you from?” and when I answered, “Portland,” I’d get, “But where are you REALLY from?” Or, “Where are your parents from?” Both answers are Portland. The refusal to see that one can look different (i.e. not-fully white) and still be American made me feel like I didn’t belong.
