Can’t I be Hispanic without Spanish?

Mónica Perez.

People assume that I can speak Spanish because my last name is Perez and I have brown skin. I have always been ostracized from Hispanic communities for being too “white” and have been accused of using my name to “get ahead” and “abuse affirmative action”. The thing I hated most was introducing myself to someone because of the bias and assumptions they make of me just from hearing my name.
