I frequently overhear things said by people who don’t realize that I am half black and half white. On several occasions, I have received numerous apologies from coworkers or friends for saying something stereotypical/rude/racist after they learned about my background. I always reply by saying, “You can’t see what I hear.” There have been some genuine learning experiences for other people because of these conversations. But it still amazes me what people will say when they think no one is listening. In a perfect world, I would not think of myself as “incognegro” (definition: a black person that does not want to be recognized; a black person maintaining (or trying to maintain) a low profile).
