Sheila M. Crudup.
My tiny hometown is in southwest Missouri. I grew up with racism, jokes about black people and ignorance of what the ENTIRE world was like, insulated in that white only world. Thank goodness I joined the military after high-school and left, it opened my eyes. I actually say I escaped, I really never thought I belonged there and perhaps I know why now. I have a wonderful, intelligent, beautiful, savvy, community involved, politically involved and much loved bi-racial son who grew up in a WHOLE different way than I did. I am grateful for this, and proud to see he and I working together to be a part of the change that is happening NOW.
