God created people. We created race.

Rabbi Jeremy Gerber

I actually came up with this one together with a good friend who is an Episcopal Priest. We were talking about how skin color has nothing to do with quality of person or hierarchy in the world. Maybe it’s really all about proximity to the equator and the passage of time. If I moved to a sunnier climate, wouldn’t my descendants have darker skin in 5 or 6 generations? God created us all the same, and just placed us in various parts of the world. We came up with the term ‘race,’ and we have it all its connotations and value judgments. I think it’s good for us to remember that from time to time.
