I’ve been reflecting a lot on my very homogenous (from a race perspective) friend group. Is this a reflection on me, or a reflection on a system and society that was designed to largely keep us apart? Probably a bit of both. My high school was somewhat diverse, but I gravitated to activities that a lot of white people participated in…distance running & newspaper. In college & post college, same story. I can blame it on the system, but I have agency within this system, agency to choose my activities, to choose who I engage with, to choose who I seek out. Why have I tended to choose people who look (& in most cases think) like me? How might I change that moving forward?
