My mother is Black, hailing from Tampa, Florida. My father is Ghanaian, coming from Ghana on the west coast of Africa. I was born in American but identify with and embrace both cultures, because they *ARE* different. However, I constantly get asked how they’re different because many Americans seem to conflate Black and African. Let’s not even get started on why, more often than not, I say African instead of Ghanaian. So many people view Africa as a monolith as opposed to a continent comprised of diverse nations and cultures. They know what “African” means, but few people understand that “Ghanaian” is tied to Ghana, or even know that Ghana is a nation in Africa. I get tired of explaining the difference.
