Race is a social construct. In the United States and in our community, it has been installed over generations into our culture and society, by mostly white people.
In more recent years, I have come to better appreciate the leadership role white people must take in the dismantling these structures put into place by our ancestors. Structures that today reinforce separation and cement the ill-conceived hierarchies based on race.
It is simply not sufficient to be passive allies with our black, brown and indigenous neighbors in the pursuit to create a more just society.
We must lead ourselves and each other to become the change.
