I am well-spoken, so what?

Kenya Palmer Chalmers.

My dad is the best communicator I know (verbal and written). As a young child, I was encouraged to read and share my thoughts about what I read. Along the way, I fell in love with words and their various meanings. From as early as I can remember, white adults (mostly educators) would comment “You are so well spoken!” as if they expected the opposite. My ability to communicate is source of pride for me (almost a tribute to my Dad) and these comments over the years have stung each time I’ve heard it. In my head, I’ve always wanted to yell back “So, what.. what did you expect… everyone I know speaks like me!!”
