I was called White

Brandi A. Thomas.

When I was a little girl in elementary school I had long hair and light skinned, with freckles. My classmates would ask me what am I and as a kid I obviously knew very little about race, I only knew what my parents told which was that I am multiracial. I think that always left questions from the moment people would say that to me trying to classify me into one race and still to this day its always been something I wondered where I fit in whether it was with my black friends or white friends or hispanic friends because it seemed everyone was telling me I could only be one race and not be proud of all my nationalities. I have now grown up and I refuse to be categorized into anyone’s specific view of what I should claim as if I have one primary nationality. I am a proud European, African American, Portuguese, and Native American woman and I will raise my daughters to love all parts of them just as I have.
