In 1969 my best friend was black and had a serious Afro. I, a Jew with curly red hair, proudly imitated my friend’s hairstyle by using a pick to create a massive Jewfro. We often shared tales of how annoyed both sets of parents were about our out-of-control hair, and how happy it made us to annoy them. Once, standing together on the El platform at 52nd and Market Streets in Philadelphia, on the way to school, we were delighted to be noticed by two older and very elegantly dressed black women, who spoke thus about us: “One of them is just as bad as the other!” Very satisfying indeed.
