Growing up, my parents would tell me to “look away” or “cover your ears” when there was anything that may scare me. Even today, I instinctively bury my face during scary movies… however, what do we do when our reality is much scarier than some movie? Although we want to look away, to ignore the injustices, that doesn’t mean they will be gone when we decide to look back. Unfortunately, looking away not only further isolates those affected by racism, but also desensitizes us. My white bubble is definitely the cozier option, but cozy doesn’t drive the change that we need right now. I commit to leave my passivity in the past and fix my eyes on a future worth fighting for.
