People often compliment me on being beautiful and ask where I’m from. I tell them I’m from Brooklyn, NY where I was born and raised. Obviously, that doesn’t satisfy them because they continue to ask more like “where are your parents from?” I am forced to admit that my mom is from Guyana and my dad is from Trinidad. “Ahhhhh” they say as if that’s the answer they knew was coming. “That’s why you’re so beautiful. You’re mixed.” My response always and forever will be “mixed nationality isn’t a thing, dude.”
