Mother’s school closed for being black?

Carmen Edmonds, Richmond, VA, .

I grew up in a small rural area; as a child I learned how education was so important. My mother was denied that for four years. In 1960, her school was closed when she was in the sixth grade. At that time, the county refused to integrate the schools. Because of her struggle with education, it has made me into the person that I am today. Including the love I have for education, equality and fairness.
